BRIEF HISTORY OF ORGANIZATION



On 15th January 2010 at a historic meeting in Jaipur, two events took place. First an outstanding one and a half day scientific meeting and deliberation with outstanding speakers from around the world convened by a distinguished group of global psychiatrists of shared Indian subcontinent ancestry. Second the coming together in agreement for initiating the Indo Global Psychiatric Initiative (IGPI) the umbrella organization incorporating the federation of Indian Associations of the world. This auspicious event was accorded the name 'The Jaipur accord'. An executive and council was appointed and mandated to develop the constitution, aims and objectives etc which received much interest and discussion at the Jaipur Accord session of the conference.

The joint session of all the component members identified many objectives that included avenues to optimize the effectiveness of the contributions of Indian sub continent origin psychiatrists to global mental health care. To establish close working ties between IPS, IAPA, BIPA, ICPA and IAPA (Aus & NZ) and similar organizations. To establish funds to promote mental health in the Indian sub continent. To establish training and educational opportunities, for residents in training in the sub continent. To provide learning, research and dissemination of knowledge in areas related to mental health issue as related to psychiatrist of origin from the Indian sub continent. The council led by the President and Secretary put these together including the constitution requirements.

An outstanding scientific IGPI meeting was planned with distinguished speakers from the component psychiatric organizations of India, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and UK. An outstanding scientific program was put together by Professor M. Keshavan the Chair of the scientific committee along with the IGPI scientific advisory committee members. This IGPI 2011 Conference took place on 14th and 15th January 2011 at the Ashoka Hotel in New Delhi.
